Can you now take dogs on planes to the UK?

Can you now take dogs on planes to the UK?

Postby Shelles » Thu Nov 09, 2023 7:51 am

Hello, my friends have told me that you can now take dogs on the plane, in a dog carrier of course. Is this true? Only, we are going to the UK for Christmas and the kennels are fully booked, so if we could take our dog withnus, the grandkids would love that.

Check with the airline direct to get a true answer. It is usually only assistance dogs that some permit.

They would have to travel as cargo in the hold, unless a guide dog or you are travelling by private plane. If flying in the hold, only some carriers will take them ( eg TUI can, but not any of the budget airlines) and you'll also need to be flying in to one of the approved airports that can handle arriving pets. Heres a link to government guidelines.

Flying pets as cargo can be humongously expensive. Think probably at least 3 times the cost of your own plane ticket.

Maybe one of the pet couriers. There was a post not too long ago on pet transport. The dog could always arrive before you. Here are a couple of suggestions for starters

It is possible to take small pets in a carrier on some airlines between a number of countries in the Eu. But not into the UK. UK regulations.

I stand corrected as the departure airport was Dublin which is in the EU

Fair does, I have also anecdotally heard that one airline at a regional uk airport has let a small animal fly out bound. But DEFINITELY the only way they can fly INBOUND to the UK is as cargo... with all that entails.. p Ultimately, if people would like to travel to and fro to the UK with pets, realistically this needs to be them driving. Or paying a pet transport company to drive them. Or being willing to pay thru the nose for cargo transport ( assuming that you aren't bothered re the flying process potentially stressing your pets out...)

Thanks for all of your replies. As I thought, there hasn’t been any changes recently.
