Changing suppliers
Changing suppliers

I've been with the same supplier for the past 3 years and am thinking of changing. I'm currently on the 3 timeframe option (cheap overnight, peak 10-2 and 6-10) and have been offered a rate between the lower 2 rates on a 24hour basis, thus removing the need to only do washing on weekends etc...
I've been told all the other charges, meter rental, standing charge etc are the same across all the suppliers... is this true?

The electricity distributors in Spain are Iberdrola, Endesa, Gas Fenosa, EGP. EDP Cantabrico, EON, Acciona, Nexus and EVM. All the rest are electrical suppliers.
The distributor provide the power, the meters and so on and also electricity if you contract with them. The other companies, or suppliers, purchase the power from the distributors and get reductions in the electricity which they pass on to the customer. Therefore the normal standing charges will be the same depending on which distributor they contract with.
There is the free and regulated rate. When prices go down then it is great being with the free rate suppliers. If the rate goes up, like it did a couple of years ago when Ukraine kicked off, the price goes up and quite considerably. If you are with a distributor on a contract then the prices remain fixed at the regulated rate.
The main distributors and suppliers for solely electricity in this area are Endesa and Iberdrola with Gas Fenosa just behind. They have several contracts you can choose including an all day fixed rate along with day/night and choose your own 8 hours.
I stayed with Iberdrola throughout the recent fluctuations in prices as it didn't seem worth the hassle to maybe save a maximum of 10 to 12 euro a month and glad I'm did as loads were complaining there bills had doubled whilst mine stayed the same and weren't hit with the much higher Gas redemption prices.
Iberdrola current stable plan is fixing prices for 5 years so you need to look around and see what fits your requirements the best. Octopus energy, evergreen, Naturgy and others are suppliers so you will pay the same standing charges and their rates will increase if we go through what we did a couple of years ago.
My current cost with Iberdrola as permanently here with a 3 bed house and all electric has averaged out at 53 euro a month over the last 14 months and that includes a high month when we had several visitors. I know this will go up next year if they stop the tax relief and green tax reduction on electricity.
