Bringing near classic car to live in Spain
Bringing near classic car to live in Spain
by Maccaloon » Tue Dec 19, 2023 4:50 am
Hi all,
I am currently looking at selling my Mk1 1992 Eunos Roadster (The Japanese domestic version of the MX5). Then, I thought it would be a great little convertible to have for Spain, but I wonder how much it would cost me to import it over and to run it?
The car is currently valued with my insurer in the UK for only £4000. The emissions on the car are 196 g/km, which falls foul of ULEZ in London.
Anyone have an idea of what the total cost would be and what my yearly tax and insurance would work out at?
Although the car is over 30 years old, I don’t think it would qualify as a classic because of the modifications made, for example the wheels are not the originals.
Many thanks.

Hi Macaloon,
I brought my 1972 classic over with the help of Lee who can be contacted here - very helpful
[email protected]
Good luck - I certainly get more use in a summer week here than I did in a whole year back there that's for sure!
Kind regards
Paul

I second that recommendation for Leigh Blann of Spanish Numberplates. Great guy. You're looking at a processing cost of around 600 euros plus import and registration tax on the Spanish market value of the car based on the Boletin Oficial Del Estado. The oldest MX-5 I can find in there is a 1998 which is currently valued at EUR 11.900. I don't know how they calculate the registration tax for a 40 year old car, but for VAT alone my guess would be 21% of 11.900 (=EUR 2.500) because you are importing from outside of the EU. If you wanna be sure just send off an email to Leigh, he will probably be able to give you a ballpark figure for the total.

Thanks, guys. I will send an email to Leigh. Do you guys know roughly what the annual insurance and tax would be on the car? Would I have trouble with the ITV because of the emissions?
I want to get a convertible for Spain so it seems a shame to sell this to by another, although this car has no Air Con!!

'Grey' imports can present special problems, just be aware.

Yes, that is the concern, plus getting air con back in my Eunos and the money starts to pile up to the price of a domestic used Spanish Opel Cascada or similar convertible.

Re insurance etc, that will depend on year and value etc and I can recommend Donna at RIGHTMOVE for an insurance quote when the time comes:
[email protected]
Leigh will of course be able to advise on all other aspects of fees as ericc has suggested.
Good luck.
Kind regards

Just another question related to this, given the inflated price of used cars in Spain, has anyone imported from a neighbouring LHD country and made a saving?

Obviously I would have the car in Spain for the first six months, but is there a garage people suggest to carry out the necessary European conversion when the time comes?
Thanks
Thanks

You'd still have to pay the import taxes and re-matriculation etc.
The only way around the taxes is if you'd owned and used the other car for a period of over 6 months in the country you are bringing it in from and had paid the equivalent rate of VAT there.
