I know that you can only use either your smartphone OR the reader to get glucose results with freestyle. so my question is, do I need to purchase the reader or can I just purchase the patches to get my readings? thanks.

If you have the app on your smartphone you can see your blood sugar levels on that and you don't need a reader.
