Change Of Ownership or Sale of Car?

My friend is going back to the UK and is giving me his Spanish car as its not worth very much at all. Its an old thing from 2001, but will be really handy as a spare in the event my car breaks down.

On the paperwork, there is a change of ownership and also a for sale checkbox. What would be the correct one to use, and does whatever we chose have any consequences, positive or negative?


Im not buying the car, he is just giving it to me. It would be superb to have to pay the minimum of costs if possible.

I want to try and do it without using a service I need to pay for. I know thats obviously a much easier option, but I want to try and use the power of the internet and try and do it without paying for it.

Look at the DGT Site and also I believe it can be done at Correos or SUMA office - best to take your friend with you. Citizens Advise will have info. on their site. It’s important to check everything re parking and speeding fines etc.

Oneway only charge 50 euros to do it properly and the transfer fee is 77 euros on a vehicle as old as yoursc

This is what you will need

Documents needed to Transfer a Spanish Reg Car:
Copy of the Permiso de Circulación (green paper)
• Copy of the Ficha Técnica (technical sheet)
• Copy of DNI/TIE or NIE & passport of both seller and buyer
• Signed sales contract in Spanish by buyer and seller with date and time
Copy of Modelo 620 to show you have paid any taxes due

Transfer tax to be paid to DGT is 54,60€ for a car. You can pay by bank card.

As well as information in my post above here is information on calculating the ITP and paying it on modelo 620. You will pay a fixed fee as the vehicle is over 12 years. You can do the transfer at Correos once you have all the documentation which saves a trip to dgt.

General Rate: 6% for all vehicles.
With the following exceptions:

In the case of transmission of passenger cars, off-road vehicles, adaptable mixed vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds, with a value of less than 20,000 and more than 12 years old , excluding those classified as historical vehicles, the amount to be paid is a fixed fee. which varies depending on the cylinder capacity of the vehicle:
Motorcycles and mopeds with a cylinder capacity less than or equal to 250 cubic centimeters: €10
Motorcycles with a cylinder capacity greater than 250 cubic centimeters and less than or equal to 550 cubic centimeters: €20
Motorcycles with a cylinder capacity greater than 550 cubic centimeters and less than or equal to 750 cubic centimeters: €35
