Facillities on the Bilbao ferris are not designed for car drivers as they are designed to carry freight so I was told

We have used both ports to Southampton or Portsmouth, boats equally good. Some have entertainment as well, which helps pass the time.

Also been to Plymouth via Brittany ferries. Restaurants are good.

Arrived a couple of weeks ago, Portsmouth to Bilbao, on the Salamanca, Brittany ferries. Last year was via Santander. Same ship and no real difference in journey. Brittany ferries use their 2 new ships on these routes and both are very good. They have restaurants and bars but it’s still a long journey!! They have a deck for dog walking, but it’s not up to much.

Both ships on the Portsmouth to Santander and Bilbao route are virtually new and classed as cruise ferries, TV and air con in cabins etc. The Plymouth to Spain ship, Pont Aven, is older and more traditional in style. Still a very comfortable ship, just with slightly older style. Majority of users are now car owners noticeably less lorry's using them. My opinion based on 8 trips per year for past 10 years. If you would like any further info re hotels or road route's in spain just e-mail me.
