Stay close to the terminal as the ship will leave without them if they arrive back at the terminal late

Park in the car park between The Meliá Hotel and the Spa Porta Maris. It is about 20 euros a day but close to where the ships come in. Then from the car park turn right at the traffic lights and walk into the old town, 5 minutes, lots of nice restaurants, and pretty area.

A wander round the castle - there’s some fantastic views up there
A visit to the Mushroom street.
There’s the open top tourist bus - although I must say I wasn’t very impressed the last time we went on it.
Loads of lovely restaurants in the marina area.
Take a tram journey to San Juan beach, again there’s some lovely restaurants there and it’s only 15 minutes away.
If you’ve still got time to spare then right where you meet the cruise passengers is the excellent Ocean Race Museum.
If they don’t want to stay in Alicante, then drive tothe marina at Santa Pola or to the beach at El Campello.
Just on the N332 as you approach Alicante is the Parc El Palmeral - well worth a visit as it’s one of the prettiest parks in the area.

We did a similar meet with family on a cruise. We stayed in Alicante the previous night so we could visit the castle and plan the day for our family. Next day met the family but the visit to the castle had to be abandoned as the queues for the lift from the cruise visitors were very long. Suggest you give the castle a miss! The old town is lovely and we wandered around during the day. I agree with a previous comment that you must be careful to allow enough time to get back to the ship.

Hogueras museum is free and fun. Not far from mushroom street.
Recommend Santa Gloria’s for lunch. Huge selection of food and bakery items with fabulous cakes.
It’s a must for us when in Alicante

Read somewhere there's a new hop on, hop off open top bus tour in Alicante. Sounds good.

If they are active people you can walk up to the Castle from a stone pathway in Parc de l'Ereta, Calle Remigio Sebastia which is in the Old Town. It says 8 mins or 30 mins stopping to take in the views as you walk up. https://www.footstepstravelblog.com/spa ... -alicante/
