Can anyone identify this Snake

Can anyone identify this Snake

Postby clivespana » Fri Oct 24, 2014 6:57 am

We heard the dogs barking and when we investigated we saw a snake on top of our 7 foot wall, it then went up our vertical arch over the gate, (this arch is nearly 14 foot). It turned back and hid between the gate and the arch and remained motionless for some time.
The snake was about 1.5 metres long, very dark, almost black on top with orange/yellow pattern underneath. It's head was quite small, and it's body fattened out in the middle to about 1.5 inches, it's tail was very long and thin.
Can anyone identify this from this sketchy description.
We were amazed at its climbing ability, it easily scaled the 7 foot vertical wall.
We tried to take photos but in our panic failed miserably.
The snake finally went along the wall and climbed into a tree where we lost it.

Could it be a horseshoe whipsnake? grows about 1.5 meters, is slender and runs away quickly from people

We live near Benimar. We came home one night and our cat was in the street "playing" with a small snake, about 2 foot long... the cat was batting it about and the snake was not pleased. I went in the house for a glove to move the snake away from harm but when I got back it had scarpered... I wouldn't worry about your cat..

We have just bought a holiday home in pueblo bravo, Quesada. Do you see many snakes in this area? I have been a few times now and have only seen geckos in the evening thank goodness!

We have been back and forth to the area for over 9 years and have only ever seen a couple of dead shrivelled up snakes (separately) in all that time. They were in the road, so not sure if cars had run over them - Never seen a live one!

Hi Normally the only people to have severe problems are if they suffer from anaphylactic shock. You are more likely to have your plane crash on the way over than be killed with a snake. most people do not realise that snakes are common in the UK and they are no more dangerous than the ones in Spain.

Of the estimated 50 snakebite deaths a year in Europe, only 3-6 occur in Spain, so don't worry. More people die from bee and wasp stings.

If you are bitten by a snake, remain calm and seek medical attention immediately. Bites only occur in the spring and summer as snakes hibernate. ;)
