Any particular protection required for CH systems here ?

Any particular protection required for CH systems here ?

Postby AMK » Sat Aug 27, 2016 4:51 pm

I have a 10yo oil fired boiler, working well, touch wood.... I was looking at it today along with the radiators and I wondered if the systems here need any rust inhibitors or some other protective additive put in them as we do back in the UK ? I know there is a lot of calcification here from my kettle and taps, but I'm not sure how that affect a CH system. Any info or advice....

Hi AMK, with regards to your central heating system, I spoke with my nephew who is a central heating engineer, (plumber to you and me), he said that rust inhibitors should be used no matter where in the world you reside, as water and metal aren't the most compatable elements. Also with regards to the calcification, he suggested adding something equivalent to calgon to your system, run it for a few weeks then drain it completely to check if anything comes out, (going on the age of your system) if all clear add rust inhibitor again and calgon or equivalent refill system and you should be alright. He also suggested getting a registered central heating engineer to check out the whole system as well just to be on the safe side.

The internet is also your friend...apparently, after a good flush through, Fernox F1, the same inhibitor stuff used in the south of the UK for high chalk concentrations in the water is appropriate here. I haven't seen any reference to Calgon, as a pre-flush, so I'm going to go with the Fernox equivalent.
Many thanks for taking the time to reply, I greatly appreciate it.

Amk before you put inhibitor in check what rads youve got ie aluminium or steel as some inhibitors are not suitable for alu.if your going to flush out get a flushing agent for old systems run it for couple weeks then flush it out.and don,t forget to run your boiler for a couple of minutes at least once a month. Also when your running rads for flushing if you have,nt got a rubber mallet use a shoe and tap (thump) the rad put a towel on rad it,ll loosen any rubbish inside.you can get this stuff off screwfix es.

Sorry AMK, my fault as my nephew did mention the name of the product for the calcification, when I asked him what it was he said does the same job as calgon does on washing machines etc. Unfortunately by the time I came to add my two pence worth to the forum, I had forgotten the name of the product hence I suggested a similar product to calgon. Memories eh! the joys of getting old :(
