"Ģas" or "No Gas" - that is the question

We live on a fault line here! Why on earth would anyone want to risk having natural gas installed! How big an earthquake would it be I wonder to dislodge the pipes that supply the natural gas, or, worse!

You don't have to have it installed it is in the area if the big one hits natural gas will be the least of your problems! ;)

So make the most of life whilst you can! YOU COULD GET RUN OVER TOMORROW, but hopefully not. :text-lol: be positive if the ice age comes you would be warm!! :D

I have loads of information about Natural Gas may I firstly say that my wife works for a Gas company its a very large company there are no scams its just about personal choice for the customer but here are some interesting facts.

The price of the unit of natural gas is 0,076 euros/kwh (I think Electricity is more than this)

Example follows which was for an urb near Eagles Nest but I would think all Urbs are similar.

Two different offers and options to install the pipes. One is an individual and private installation for one house, with two connections (the boiler and the kitchen or a gas fire) included. The price is 200 euros plus VAT and will be paid after the works are done. When you then get connected and start using gas, you will use it for 2 months before you get the first bill, on that first bill you have your connection fees, a governmental one off payment of 182,50 euros plus VAT. You can pay that in one go or choose to pay it in one years time on your gas bills with 0% interests. Standing charge for individual gas installations is 2,25 euros a month.

The other option is a communal installation for 3 houses or more, meaning that the communal part of the installation is the property of the company and needs a yearly service. This offer is a free installation with two connections and we give each client an automatic gas boiler. The standing charge in these houses is 8,58 euros a month, due to yearly service.

The material used is copper, 15-18 mm copper pipe that endures about 140°c and 300 kg pressure. A very strong material following EU regulations for natural gas installations.

The community of owners will bear no cost of bringing the gas into the urb. The company will finance the channeling, once we have made sure there is sufficient demand. And the main pipes laid underground in private community roads are property and under full responsibility of Gas Natural. There is a legal document to be signed that gives them access to fulfill this responsibility and it is also important that you know that when the channeling is done, the road will be put back to its original condition. A narrow channel on one side of the road will be dug out to place the pipes underground.

The decision to use natural gas is individual, although to reach some of the properties in the urb we will need an agreement from the community of owners for channeling any private roads within the urb.

In Spain, natural gas installations to private properties are visible as such. The pipe work is brought in on the outside, not underground. But every house is a special case to be studied. In some houses there are good means to hide pipework, underbuilds that fulfil regulations can be used and so on. The best way to bring in the pipe will be studied with the owner and an agreement reached on the matter.

Installation works begin shortly before the main gas pipes are scheduled to be put in the streets, leaving the pipe work ready to be connected to the source, the switching of boilers will be left until the day you get connected, in order not to take your hot water away. When you get connected to the main pipe, you will be visited by an inspector from the government for a revision and testing of appliances and you will get a certification for 5 years for your installation as a whole. After that you will be informed about obligatory service and certification. It is not an expensive maintainence, about 50 euros every five years.

Summary
No monies upfront potential free installation with a free boiler and you save money over many years compared to using Electricity appliances seems difficult not to at least know the facts before making a decision.

Hope this document at least clears up any confusion.

Hi everyone but especially Steve 2577. We are new to Quesada & the forum.
We have a place in Marquees 5 and visit frequently, earlier this year we agreed to have Gas installed. The process went exactly as Steve described in so far as pipework installed & meter installed. However, we don't know who to contact to arrange getting the boiler & hob installed. Last week I tried ringing a number on the paperwork they left with us but unfortunately the lady on the end of the phone didn't speak English & I don't speak Spanish. The salesperson hand wrote an Email address on the paperwork but unfortunately every time we try to Email it never goes through.
Can anyone help contact details or explain what we do next ?
Thanks John

I heard a rumour that the gas pressure was too low in places where it has been installed - so ineffective. Anyone know if this is true?

Thank you Steve 2577 for posting this earlier this year. Very helpful. I have just signed up as they are currently laying the pipes in our area. Did have doubts about signing up as I am an non resident and thinking about the cost/ benefit etc. But given we are still on our original electric boiler and that we may want to install central heating one day it seemed daft not to seize on the offer on a free new boiler and cheap installation, an essential first step, which I am sure will cost a great deal more if done subsequently. However I am now having second thoughts and wondering if I have done the right thing. In particular I met someone who said he got a tax bill for 200 euros which I thought was on top of the of the connection fee, so Steve2577 has put my mind at rest on that point. My other doubts centre around the maintenance of the boiler and the ease of replacing it when it conks out. Here is the question - Apart from the mandatory certificate every 5 years do I need to have it serviced annually like the one in the UK even though the one in the UK is a combi for central heating? I guess gas is gas whatever it is connected to and therefore needs regular maintenance!
Who can do the maintenance/replace a gas boiler in Spain and what are the costs?I would welcome any additional pearls of wisdom on this topic.
Thanks
Sylwina
