"Ģas" or "No Gas" - that is the question

"Ģas" or "No Gas" - that is the question

Postby zeff » Wed Mar 04, 2015 7:56 pm

Hi we have been contacted by a Company who are proposing to run gas supply into our urbanisation and part of their "pitch" has been informing us about all the financial benefits as well as the comfort aspect of having heating/central heating. All the proposed works will be done (allegedly) with minimum disruption, minimum costs to us, whilst we will benefit from cheaper gas.

We are relatively new to Quesada and are not as experienced in the potential living costs as some of the other residents, we have not yet received our first electricity bill for heating our home so far this year so we are very keen to know other members experiences of any similar projects.

GAS, GAS, GAS, Comfort, Comfort, Comfort, the only thing better in my opinion is a log burner but gas is more convenient we have a log burner and are going to have gas CH as well so we have the best of both worlds and as you get older and don't want to lug logs about or the times when it is not worth putting on but you want the extra heat, AC is also great as you need that for cooling and it heats cheaply now, if budget allows get the lot!!! and live in luxury ;)

I suggest you do not sign documents ,or hand over any cash down payments in lieu of "new gas supply" until you find out a lot more , we're also new to the area so firstly wait on feedback from the more experienced members of the forum.

More Experienced in what! Gar Natural i.e. piped gas in the area is new but only to the area, on our urbanisation many people have signed up been installed and are very pleased we have only been waiting because of agreements to run the pipe down a private road in the community had to be agreed, now it is many cant wait especially the elderly that already had gas CH running of bottles and now have the luxury of not having to hump them about. :D

I hope I'm not putting the cat amongst the pigeons but, although I can see the advantages of central heating in Spain, I do agree with the 'be cautious' comments by Liz & Gordon re: "do not sign documents ,or hand over any cash down payments in lieu of "new gas supply".

The advantages of central heating in Spain are obvious to any of us who have spent time there between December and April but, as with anything like this, there could be scammers about and this type of thing is 'ripe' for it.

In my opinion, there really should be no need for door step selling/signing up!

With good leafleting, letters and forums like this to clarify the authenticity of the gas companies, it should sell itself.

Personally I have never signed up for anything on the doorstep - It's easy to take a leaflet, check it out independently and then, if wanted, sign up later. That way advice from those who already have it and checks on the companies supplying the gas can be sought.

Hi Jan
Totally agree with most of what you are saying and you do have to be very carful and never hand over cash but just so you know Gas Natural have agents canvasing for a reason, they are laying mains gas supply down main roads in the area then sending commission paid agents to canvas side roads and if they can get enough people to agree in principal to having the gas installed they will then lay a gas spur down the side road but only if they think they will get a certain amount of initial business, they are offering a good deal to get people interested i.e. Ferolli boiler and 6 Ferroli radiators for around 3200 euros or 2,320 pounds!! a connection also charge applies but this is a fantastic offer as far as we are concerned. :D

I must say I have seen some of the pipework and am not impressed. On some houses the copper pipe is just clipped to the walls. Copper is expensive and I wonder how long before some "enterprising" chap decides to weigh some in by ripping it off the wall...

And we had an earthquake last year which cracked our walls... what would have happened if the gas pipe went across said wall..?

I will wait and see I think...

Hi, is this happening in the lo marabu area? If so my husband has been in the Gas industry all his days so when we come over would be interesting to see what his opinion is.

I,m not being sarcastic ,but how do you retrospectively run a pipe into a building with concrete floors ,without very expensively digging them up, in a building that could be subject to subsidence its best to use copper as it moves easier than steel, its never going to be a thing of beauty,at the end of the day the choice is comfort or asthetics, mine personally is my two lovely copper pipes going over my door carrying lovely hot waterto my rads, you can always sleeve them cover them thieves dont like to be held up,i personally would be more worried by the wrong sized pipe being put in a 24 kw combi require a gas pipe 22mm pipe not 15 mm
