Buying a new house - how do utilities get changed?

Buying a new house - how do utilities get changed?

Postby AbiC » Fri Apr 20, 2018 9:03 pm

Hi, we’re buying a villa in the next couple of weeks and wondered how the electric and water get changed into our name? Has anyone been through this process recently? I don’t know who the current providers are...
Thanks in advance!

This should be sorted out by your solicitor - they will normally do all of this for you, including making sure there are no outstanding bills on the property (In Spain the bills go with the property and not the person, so if previous occupants leave a big lecky bill, well you just inherited it ... ) . Really, ask your solicitor for reassurance that they are doing this for you. As far as I understand it, most solicitors do this as part of their house sales service.

I agree with Shiva. Our solicitor set up all our Direct Debits, water, electric, SUMA and Community fees. She retained a small sum from the purchase fee in case the sellers hadn't settled these up.

All we had to do was to set up the internet provider DD.
