just a re cap from my original post dated 30th December..
I was on 5.75kw potencia standing charge which has increased to around 55 euro for the past 12 years.
Now since January Ive dropped two stages to 3.45kw potencia standing charge is now 35 euro
Thats a saving of 240 euro a year !! and have not changed my way of using the electricity ie..having multiple large appliances on at the same time.
In fact over the last three months ive used more appliances increasing the load and units because of the winter.
Hope this helps anyone in thinking of saving some hard earned money.
Happy Easter to all.

Mr Bradley Green wrote:Many thanks for that. It sounds like a Smart Meter may be the way forward for us. We are over in May so will make some enquiries how to get one.. Happy New Year ! All the best for 2017.
Does this mean that when you have a smart meter you don't pay standing charges anymore - you just pay for what you use?
Also having recently purchased (last month) - I tried to label the six fuses in my fuse box - expecting: sockets / lights / cooker etc - but by a process of elimination I discovered that everything was on one fuse!
Now I am not "electrically savvy" but would that mean our fuse would trip more than it would if they had been wired to separate fuses???
Ps builder was Euromarina - who I thought were quite good ???

Hopefully you just turned off the Master switch which would turn off everything . . . . if indeed the whole place is wired through just one trip switch you could be in a world of pain. . . . not only could it trip more often, depending on the rating of the trip switch, your safety is at stake as any fault would need to build up a higher current before the trip went . . .
Lighting circuits generally have thinner wiring than mains sockets which is why they have lower rated trip switches to prevent overloading and overheating . . plus if, say, a conventional lightbulb blew it could take out the entire house supply rather than just the lighting circuit. Spanish plugs don't have fuses in them so appliances and your safety rely on the house trip switches being OK.
For your own peace of mind I would have it checked out, it could be down to your lack of electrical savvy, or a previous owner could have botched the system . . .

Thanks - you have made me think now (back in uk) - there were 6 switches and then a grey/black one at the end - which I assumed was the master switch - but from memory one of the switches near the end was different and had a "reset" button incorporated in it - and I may have turned that off with the others - and then put numbers 1,2,3,4 & 5 on - one at a time - and nothing happened - but then I have pulled the one down with the incorporated reset switch - and everything came on - so if that was the "master switch" and the black/grey one is the mains switch then that would explain why I cocked up - again Thank you
