Just a query, is it cheaper to leave hot water on or just put it on when needed

I take it its eclectic, turn on when needed fit a timer switch if necessary. ;)

We have an electric one. We put it on a timer switch for an hour in the morning and an hour an a half in the late afternoon. We have ample hot water throughout the day including showers etc.
