We're on a 5.5 kw potencia so the minimum, if there is one, must be that or maybe even lower.

How do you go about getting a smart meter? Are there still two tariffs even if you haven’t arranged it? If so, what would be the times of the cheaper tariff? Sorry for the inquisition but I’ve just arrived here and a lot to learn.

Smart meters are being installed in all the properties. Quite a lot have had them done but others are still waiting for them to get around it.
You have to sign up for the dual tariff and arrange it yourself. If not, you will be charged one rate throughout the entire 24 hours. You can sign up on line and it's quite simple to do as the site is in English. Once you have done so, you will be charged a lower rate from 2200 to 12:00 (October to March) or 2300 to 1300 (March to October).
It can be quite substantial just remember to use things like washing machines or dishwashers during the cheap rate times.
This is the Iberdrola website in English

You can then register and you will need the reference number of one of your bills plus NIE number etc.
Then go to the bit that asks if you want to save money and select the tariff you want.
The difference for me is about 30 euro a month.

We actually opted for the 8 hour tariff, with the cheap periods from 7-11am in the morning and from 7-11pm at night. I find that suits us better as we are usually out during the middle part of the day although I am thinking of changing the morning one to 8-12 so that we can get showers, dishwasher and washing machine all done before 12.
They do other tariffs as well such as weekend, winter and stable plans. Once you have a smart meter you can choose whichever one suits your lifestyle the best.

Just a point to note though, the unit prices for 8 hour tariffs are still more expensive than the straightforward night and day tariff. The biggest consumers of electricity are fires/heaters, water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, tumble driers and cold aircon, all of which can be programmed/used in the cheapest period of the day/night tariff.

We use the majority of our electricity in the morning for the water heater, kettle, washing machine and dishwasher and in the evening for cooking a main meal. With autumn/winter coming we also use the heating in the mornings and especially in the evenings. It may be a slightly dearer plan but with 7.5cents off peak and 16.5cents peak we find it works better for us.

Your NIE (NIF is the one the Spanish get as in Numero Identificacion Fiscal, our is Numero Identificacion Extranjero or Foreigners ID).
The one that begins with an X probably, as in X1234567B.

Got as far as the amount of one of your last two bills, put the amount in and it’s saying “ can’t register because the amount is not the same as the invoice “ although it is.
