Upgrading Electrics
Upgrading Electrics
by JohnR » Fri Oct 12, 2018 9:15 am
I need to upgrade the Electric Power in my Apartment, I have been told I need to get an Electrician to certify the installation and upgrade the main breaker.
Does anyone have experience of this and/or recommend and Electrician
Thanks
John

Do you need to do this because:
A) your main breaker is tripping when you have too many appliances on at the same time
B) your meter is tripping when you have too many appliances on at the same time
C) one of the other breakers in your fusebox is tripping?
If it’s option C then what type of breaker is it that’s tripping, and does it trip at random times, or when you have too many appliances on at the same time?
What is the rating of your main breaker at the moment?
What is the Potentia value on your bills?
Do you get monthly or bi-monthly bills?
Pete.

The answer is A
We have added air con and a couple of other appliances and been advised to upgrade our power from 3.5 to 5.75
Iberdola have told me they will upgrade once I email them a certificate

So I’m assuming that your main circuit breaker is rated at around 15 or 16 amps and that you don’t have a smart meter yet (still on bi-monthly bills)?

One of my neighbours had his upgraded recently but now I am back in the UK I can't ask him and want to get it arranged for when we are back in a few weeks
Monthly billing, not sure the rating of the current breaker.
Not on a smart meter, as far as I know the installation is still the same as when it was built in the late 80's

That’s odd, you don’t normally get monthly bills unless you’re in a smart meter - assuming that Iberdrola is your supplier. I’d suggest that you check that out before you do anything else. If you’re not sure whether it’s a smart meter or not then take a photo and post it here.
Also, it should say “telegestión” on your bill if you have a smart meter.
The rating of your circuit breaker should be printed on it.
If you do have a smart meter, and it’s not tripping, then it could simply be a faulty main circuit breaker. This does happen, more often than you might imagine.

No it's not a smart meter, we only have a problem when everything is on because the capacity is not enough.
As I said we have spoken to Iberdrola and they say we need to upgrade and the first process is to get an electrician to certify the installation., once they receive that they will upgrade the capacity but we will need a larger breaker to handle it

From what I recall my friend paid around 170 for the cert then a 140 fee to Iberodrola?
