Water and Electric re-connection
Water and Electric re-connection
by J&RSpain » Fri Oct 23, 2015 12:00 pm
We get the keys for our holiday home in Benijofar on Friday 30th October. Can you recommend how we go about having the electric and water re-connected. We are in England and would need this done before we come across.
Many thanks
Jacqui

On completion of ours recently (also in Benejofar!) the solicitor sorted it for us. There was however a "transfer into new ownership/connection fees" of 450 euros
Its normal apparently!

If your water and electricity aren't cut off the your lawyer would normally transfer the services directly into your name with the relevant companies. This is the norm and the costs are very low, in fact one is free.
If the services are cut off or disconnected, which is usual only in repossessions or properties that have been abandonned, then you need to get them reconnected. This can cause some inconvenience and cost because you may need to have a survey carried out by the supplier to check everything is in order. It can cost a couple of hundred euros, but again can be arranged through your lawyer. It will all depend on the situation of your property, but you should refer to your lawyer in the first instance.

We haven't been to my mums house in Quesada foe approximately 4 years as the water and electric were cut off. We paid our previous estate agent to sort it out and get it reconnected, which didn't happen. How can we sort this? we need to start using the house again!

I would suggest your first contact point would be your Spanish lawyer.
After such a long time the service provider may need to survey the property prior to re-connection.
If you don't have a lawyer you won't go far wrong with using Sylvia Galve Marti in Beniofar, honest and efficient, all staff speak English, excellent service. Tel: 965724871/688483750

We used Silvia to buy our property, highly recommended.

We also used Silvia for the purchase of a bank repossession and she has been excellent in getting the electric and water services reconnected for us. It is costly as the service providers charge for the meters to be installed and reconnected but Silvia organised everything very efficiently.
Happy in the sun.

First of all I would contact the Estate Agent you paid to sort this out for you and ask why they didn't do it and then ask for a refund.
Secondly if it's been 4 years since you were cut off, I would assume this was for unpaid bills, then you may need to get in touch with the utility providers who provided the house Water & Electric just before it was cut off. You may have to find some old bills to see who the providers were. It was possibly, Aquagest (now called Hydraqua) for water andIberdrolafor Electricity. They both have websites and you could email them, with the property address, to get the ball in motion for them to reconnect you (as said above it will cost you.... but not as much as you would pay with the extra a Solicitor would charge on top!). Then you can also get them to help you set up the Direct Debits so you don't get cut off again.
There is no reason why you can't sort this out yourself and save money!
