Water meter cupboard key

Water meter cupboard key

Postby nikki&graham » Mon Jun 27, 2016 10:24 am

Hi
We recently completed on a flat and do not have a key to the communal water cupboard.
We were lucky that another resident opened the cupboard for us when we needed them to. We have asked our solicitor dealing with the changeover of bills to our name and they advise a local hardware store will be able to give us a key - has anyone else been able to do this?
Would be nice to know if we have a leak we can get to the stopcock and also nice to see the meter is working correctly.

Grateful for any advice.

We lost our key and borrowed our neighbours key to get a copy made at the hardware store. All of them will usually cut keys.

So yes you can get a copy.

Here's a list of the local ones:

Thanks Jan - I asked the neighbour if we could borrow the key to get a copy made and they refused, saying it was illegal!

Oh dear! If I were you I would ask another neighbour (showing proof that you live there) or failing that find out who runs the community and ask them, as it sounds like your meter cupboard may be for the whole block.

Yes a bit strange but at least he opened it for us before going strange on us! We do not have a community apparently.
Will have to ask another neighbour I think!

Yes ask another neighbour. However I would be surprised if a block of flats did not have a community for paying fees. Did you get advised on who is responsible for what? I suppose if it's only a block with 2 floors it could be like what we call a maisonette in the UK where the lower floor owners are responsible for garden and drains and the upper floor owners are responsible for the roof.

Hope you get your key sorted. It a generally a good idea to turn off your water if you leave the property for any amount of time.

There aren't many flats and only ground and first floors. Thanks for your help.
