The rules are clear. Trouble is, some bar owner are taking risks, hoping they’ll be missed/overlooked, why they count their takings.

The rules are clear but it seems local police are interpreting them differently
The rules do not mention quizzes, microphones or recorded music, all reasons I’ve heard that have been reasons for cancelling a quiz

Banning quizzes on the basis of a microphone being used seems very sensible. Karoake has been banned for the same reason. Perhaps it appears there's no consistency in closures because there's no consistency in how bar owners break the regulations...... ;)

I don’t think any bar owner is breaking any regulations by holding a quiz as it’s not karaoke
Karaoke and mikes are different as the mike is passed on to others so could be a problem
Why would playing recorded music be a problem during a quiz when all bars play background music
I don’t think holding a quiz is against current rules and I’ve been at one when the police turned up to rescue a dog and said nothing to think any law was being broken
I repeat there is no law against quizzes but if anybody can find one please post it

Well, I know of two bars where the owners have either stopped quizzing or, suspended the music section of the quiz and Rock & Roll Bingo. Why would they do that if it wasn’t a requirement?

I still believe that some bar owners are pushing the envelope.

.
Probably because the bar owners, or the person running the quiz, doesn't know if it's a requirement or not, and are playing it safe. Others are going for the less safe, but better for business, option. The police probably have no idea either, and are using their discretion, or not, as the case may be. I think that's the whole point of this thread.

Well, if as you assume, bar owners don’t know and the police don’t know and, I doubt anyone on here knows, then, there is no point to this thread.

If a quiz is running somewhere go and, if it ain’t, go somewhere else. It’s quite simple really!
