Was told by my solicister that your tax id in Spain is simply your nie number.

Many thanks for your reply. However, the online form 210 at http://www.agenciatributaria.es/ indicates that our NIF should be in the format 8 numbers and 1 letter.
Our NIE is one letter,7 numbers and another letter. :doh:....The form does redirect you to register for an NIF based on your UK tax code.



An NIF is exactly the same as the NIE. Numero de Identificacion Fiscal (for Spanish citizens only) and Numero de Identificacion Extranjera (Foreigners ID number for everyone else).
You won't get an NIF (their ID card number followed by a letter) as a non-Spanish citizen. You only get the NIE which is one letter, 7 numbers and one letter. The first letter (X or Y) shows that it is a non-Spanish citizen.
In UK your tax reference is your NI number which is 2 letters, 6 numbers and 1 letter.
The NIE is the number used to submit tax returns in Spain.
Maybe best to get someone (solicitor or gestor) to do your very first non-resident tax return and then do them yourself after that.
