NIE certificate

This has been discussed before but I'm still a tad confused.

BTW I am non resident.

I have been advised by my fiscal rep that my old (1997) NIE certificate should be renewed. This came to light when I happened to mention that I plan to change my Spanish car.

I actually have an appointment in Orihuela to do this. But now I've got a doubt in my mind whether it's necessary, having read that it may only be more recent ones with a time limit that need to be renewed.

Can anyone throw any light on this? Thanks for any advice.

You do not need to change your NIE it is for life. Unlike the patron which needs to be renewed, ours is every 5 years. Rojales council sends us a reminder. You may need to notify a change of address, but more information will be added by people who know. We have bought cars, houses etc with our original NIE which we have had for over 10 years.

Thank you for your reply.
Yes it is the NIE that I am querying (not the padron).

I find it strange that my fiscal rep has made a mistake as she deals with many expats and has done for years. However I will ask her to clarify what she means. I don't want to go through the hassle of renewing my NIE if it is not necessary.

To confirm my current NIE was issued in 1997 (over 20 years ago).

I am not an expert but my friend recently (6 mths Ago) bought a car (new) He had to have his NIE renewed. Could not understand it at the time but he could not get his car until it was done. So perhaps someone who knows could help. I would take what your fiscal rep says as they should know.

Totally agree. If you Google it lots of explanations. Number stays with you for life.

Did he have a copy or original?i had the original with the police stamp on it not a photo copy, does that make a difference?I bought a new car 12mnths ago,at a main dealer and I,ve had my N.I.E. 17YEARS, padron upto date, encountered no problems,

I was the same 18months ago. Original certificate no problem but perhaps it has changed. I would take the advice of the fiscal rep as you would assume he knows better than anyone on here.

Thanks all for the input.

The only hint I have found on Google is that old NIE certificates are yellow, which mine is.
Maybe it's these that need updating.
I'll try and get clarification.

I had to have my original NIE certificate renewed (replaced) when I bought my car just over a year ago. They would not accept the original certificate. A fairly straightforward process albeit time consuming.

Thanks.

Could someone give me an idea of the location of the National Police in Orihuela. I've got an NIE appointment at 9am.
Is it reasonably straightforward to find and is there parking nearby? Appreciate any info.
