I'm a non-resident and not on the Padron. My NIE certificate is one of those issued when they were doing the 3 month validity thing. I bought a second hand car when the certificate was valid, then a couple of months ago I traded that car in for a different one (also second hand). I was able to use my original NIE certificate (the one with the 3 month validity clause on the bottom) to buy the car without a problem.

Somtimes the car companies copy the document and blank out the statement about the three month validity!
this is ok if you can get away with it but my solisitor told me this was not acceptable.

We bought a car in December, .. our NIEs are about 15 years old and hand-written.. the garage accepted it and the transfer went through okay..

Your NIE Number is with you for life. if you don't have one theres a company online called MY NIE NUMBER http://www.mynie.co.uk and they will do the paperwork for you.
