Hi

We have been in Spain now a few months we have our NIE number, we are looking in to buying a car we need to clarify does our NIE number expire after 3 months as one dealer informed me? or do we Keep the same NIE number as long as we are in Spain, and can buy a car.

Your NIE number does not expire. It is similar to your national Insurance number in the UK.

A few years ago they brought in a 3 month expiry for the certificate (not the number as that is for life). This was so you could formalise your status as resident or non resident within that 3 months.
However, they binned that as very few people knew about it. The certificate now has no expiry date.

However, if you are using your padron to prove your address, that needs to be within 3 months.

Just to reassure, we bought a new car a month ago on an NIE certificate issued in May 2016 with no problems . . The certificate has no expiry date on it . . .

I think the dealer must be referring to the padron, which should be renewed when you are making a major purchase i.e. a car.
