British passport renewal and Spanish residency issue

Apparently the UK government has 'jumped the gun' a bit and been issuing new passports on renewal without the words "European Union" on. ( recently talked to a couple who both recently renewed - one got a passport with 'European Union' still on, the other got one without. )Anyway if you have one of the new ones and are still hoping to get an EU citizen residency card before Brexit KEEP YOUR OLD ONE TOO, DON'T DESTROY IT, YOU NEED IT. This recent news article highlights that a full European Union passport is needed to be able to obtain an EU resident card. So, just to be on safe side, keep your old passport as well.
See this link. https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2019/09/ ... -in-spain/

I guess after Brexit it won't matter as it will all be ' third country' procedures but in meantime ...

Sorry but before I believe that I'll need to see it in some sort of official communique from the Spanish aythorities.

I have my residency so am not affected either way but I do think it's outrageous and wholly improper for UK to be thrusting non EU passports on applicants whilst the country is still a member of the union - and for all anybody knows may be remaining so for the indefinite future.

Will they reissue them free of charge if Brexit gets cancelled altogether, a possibity which is more on the cards now than ever and certainly cannot be ruled out.

Agree its not confirmed until we get it through the UK gov update site BUT given that the precaution is just to keep your old one in meantime just in case, I'd be doing it!

The UK Gov website issued an update last week on the topic of renewal or application of passports.
In essence, they are issuing both burgundy versions currently, i.e. those with and without European Union on it and both are as valid as each other and it makes no difference what's on the cover. The new blue non-EU passports will be issued from late 2019 onwards. As I understand it, an old issued UK passport which has been canceled and replaced by another one, e.g after a renewal, has no legal validity.

I have asked the British Embassy in Madrid to confirm or deny the truth of the media article but no reply as yet.

I'm not sure that's completely true, for some countries it's posible to have a long term or indefinate entry visa which can outlive a passports expiry or a renewal.

That's probably a fair point actually in relation to those types of visas, thanks for the information.
