Advice needed please. Now that we've decided to live here permanently do we have to get our residencia before activating our S1s,at the moment we are renting long term with a view to buy eventually. Thanks for any advice.

You need the S1 to get residency. Telephone Newcastle on +0044 191 218 1999.
You will need you NI numbers and they will ask you some questions over the phone. They then complete the forms and send them to your Spanish address (usually within a week).
You can then apply for residency and use the completed S1 forms to prove health cover.
Once you have your residency you can get your full SIP card on the basis of that and your S1 and padron.

Marcliff, once we are in receipt of the S1 form and obtain residency does that mean then that health cover will be in Spain only or is it possible to go back to the UK if necessary?

The issue of the S1 does not diminish your entitlement to health care in UK either as a visitor or when returning to live.

Some suggest taking the S1 with you on visits to UK and while it can do no harm frankly I can't really see the need as a search on your NI number, which will be required to access your medical records, should instantly reveal your status and entitlement.
