You do not need a pets passport to bring an animal into Spain from U.K. only need one if your taking it back.

Think you had better read up a bit more as your info is incorrect.

We definitely need a pet passport to bring the cat to Spain, its cost us £250 :O - four injections, a microchip, and three bits of paper. But the vet was unable to tell us if the rat needs one. Its all to do with rabies. Could somone ask a Spanish Vet for us ?

“Rodents, rabbits, reptiles entering Spain from a rabies-controlled or rabies-free country must be examined by a licensed veterinarian within 5 days of transport and show no signs of disease or external parasites. They must be accompanied by their owner and less than 5 in number. Birds are subject to further requirements”

Half right. Rats require no documentation so that's the half right bit. Dogs, cats and ferrets entering Spain require a pet passport and also need to be micro-chipped.
Who'd bring rats to Spain? We have enough of our own thank you very much.

Just to reiterate, there are NO CHECKS on any animals leaving the U.K. why would there be? The U.K. is rabies free. Only on re entry does the animal need documentation. On arrival in France, straight off the train and on to the motorway. Stress free.

But there are checks on entering Spain. Your statement is the same as saying there are NO CHECKS on any animals leaving Spain, why would there be? Only on re entry (to Spain) does the animal need documentation.

But as this thread relates to rats there is nothing required for Spain. You're making it sound as if you can bring any animal, including cats and dogs, into Spain with no checks or paperwork which, quite frankly, is piffle.
Pet immigration rules for Spain
Your pet must have an ISO pet microchip inserted, and be vaccinated for rabies and various other diseases at least 21 days prior to travel and not more than one year prior to travel. If your animal was vaccinated before it was fitted with a microchip, it will have to be vaccinated again after the microchip is inserted. If your pet's microchip is not ISO 11784/11785 compliant, you will have to bring your own microchip scanner.
