Thanks for all your responses. I have decided it is a form of Bugweed so I have cut it down and will remove the root!! jacqui

That looks to me like a Canna Lily. I have them in my garden, they are completely dormant in winter then reapeer in spring. They shoot up to around two feet then produce gorgeous Red flowers.

Thank you for all the comments. Fortunately it appeared in a large pot and not in the ground so I am hoping that I can remove all the root etc. It certainly isn't a lovely canna and it doesn't look like Japanese knotweed!

Not knotweed - we had that in UK & is leaves are alternate up branches off main bamboo like stalks.
And not canna lillies that have pointed leaves.
Perhaps take some leaves & photo to a garden centre?
