Hi kendoc,
We once had a similar problem and solved it without the use of a chainsaw.
Providing all you want to do is remove the stump and not the root, pop along to one of the big Chinese Bazaars and, for about 3 euros you can buy a saw with large teeth. They can be straight or sometimes curved and are about 18 inches long. With little or no effort it will cut through the stump in about two minutes. Hard to believe, but it's true.
