When choosing a society I think it's worth understanding how the society works. Some tend to be based at 1 course, which has benefits; and some tend to travel to different courses all the time, which has other benefits. I preferred the former, which is more like being a club member in the UK, but it's really a matter of choice.
Maybe somebody will suggest which societies do what.
