We have just moved to the area from Tenerife where we lived for 16 years . In Tenerife we never had to worry about heating and having been away from the cold for so long , the chilly mornings and evenings have come as a bit of a shock to our systems .
So can anyone please advise the most cost efficient way of heating our property?

Move back to Tenerife - joking. Electric is expensive , you could try a gas heater but leave some ventilation as prone to condensation and then mould .

We use the aircon to provide heat. With Iberdrola keeping us on the same fixed rate, it's the cheapest way to do it if you have an inverter type. You can get around 4Kw of heat for the price of 1Kw.

For instant heat, when we first come in, we use a portable gas heater but very rarely. If you have good ventilation, like some of the big, open staircases, they are fine but if not you will need to ensure you keep it ventilated. Also make sure you use a CO2 alarm as well. A saucer of water on top of the fire will keep the condensation down. (We don't have mains gas in our neck of the woods).

Only problem with poorly insulated houses here, they rooms cool down very quickly once the heating is off. The best thing we ever did was change the windows to proper double glazed ones. Before that we would cover the windows with what they call secondary glazing (basically cling film stuck over the windows) which helped a bit.

Never mind, we are going through a cold spell at the moment due to Arctic air coming from the north. Due to warm up a bit from next week though.

We have a wood burner and love it in the winter

I would recommend a wood burner. But be very careful who you use to fit it.

Budget Burners are very good and will advise you properly on what you need.

We heated the whole of a two bedroomed bungalow with a wood burner in the evenings and we had an oil filled radiator on a timer switch to take the edge off on chilly mornings.

But aren't wood burners destroying the planet? Greta won't be happy.

Thank you all for your suggestions, we do appreciate them but can we just ask if anyone has used infrared heating ?

We use natural gas and central heating when very cold but air con the first thing to take the chill off.

Not sure on the size of your place, We have a couple of standard floor standing 2kw convector heaters, with fan assist if needed. it has 15minute segmented 24 hr clock, we set them to come on for a half hours at a time, works absolutely fine for our needs. I would never have a portable gas heater, they give off a gallon of water vapour for every gallon of fuel used, so you need adequate ventilation for this to prevent it building up on your walls, which, to point out the obvious defeats the object of having heat if you have to ventilate too. I don’t believe electric is too expensive when you consider you don’t need that much heating generally, and you probably don’t have a gas bill alongside it.
