Initiative for UK citizens to be issued with EU passport

Hi
Has anyone seen this article in the Independent? Basically, it is calling for UK citizens to be offered the opportunty to apply for an EU passport after Brexit?

It will really help if you sign up supporting this initiative. It has been launched by a UK citizen and it needs as many signatures as possible. More than one million signatures are required to get it debated in the EU parliament. If any of you know any Spanish citizens it would be great if you could ask them to sign this.

The motion can be found here:

http://www.choosefreedom.eu/

Please do all you can to publicise this. I am worried that we will all get hammered after Article 50 is initiated : (

Thank you

Jenny

I can't see the point on this to be honest.
It's asking for an EU passport to be created which guarantees free movement within Europe. The UK government aren't going to allow people to enter the UK on and EU passport, as it would undermine one of the main reasons for Brexit - to limit who can enter the UK.
If we don't allow entry on an EU passport then Brits are hardly going to be allowed to join the scheme after Brexit.

There's a typo in the official Main Objective statement of the petition ("signal" rather than "single"), which reinforces my view that this is a rather amateurish initiative.

I'm all for something that will make European travel easier for us after Brexit, but I don't think this is the answer.

Pete.

Have to agree with Peter, best to wait and see what initiatives come out of the negotiations but I doubt if travel between the EU and the U.K. will ever be visa free
As Peter says, visa free travel is not an objective of brexit. There are, however, positive moves to allow eu citizens currently resident in the uk or here in Spain to continue to remain with the same status as its in nobody's interest to see mass deportations from the eu and from the uk
There may be conditions attached such as preference going to those in work or self funded as ex pat Brit retirees are here so what this petition hopes to achieve is a bit off beat as I can't see the eu issuing such a document or it being recognised by the uk

The fact of the matter is that we didn't need visas for Europe before we joined the EU, so why would we now? I am not aware that North Americans Australians etc need visas for Europe. I think there is just a lot of scare mongering going on,
Time will tell but I dont think things wil lchage a lot. We will need to show our passports when we enter the first European country....but we do that now

Currently Australians need a Schengen visa for short term visits to the eu but American citizens don't
I daresay uk citizens will be treated similarly to us citizens but as flori says there's too much scaremongering, too much doom and too much gloom
I think so best just to wait and see
The PM's of both Spain and the U.K.have both stated that the want the status of both respective citizens settled beneficially and I believe that both are genuine in that respect
Let's just relax and enjoy the sunshine

You need a visa for the USA of stays of more than 90 day. Trump may decide to change that at some point depending on what mood he's in. I think an EU passport would just be a worthless bit of paper. The real details that need sorting are who provides the NHS healthcare.

If the UK provides NHS healthcare for EU expats after Brexit including Spanish then Spain will have to do so for UK expats too. We (the UK) mustn't be the soft touch we are now!
If Spain does not continue as it is now with healthcare for resident expats, then the Spanish living in the UK (and other EU citizens living in UK) should not get free NHS either.

It is an arrangement that needs to be made and if there is no a reciprocal arrangement with Spain then the UK cannot continue allowing NHS care for resident Expats either.

Personally I believe that there is too much at stake on both sides to stop the health care for Expats as it is now but as always we have to wait and see.

Mrs May has stated that it is her intention post Brexit that EU citizens living in Britain will be allowed to stay in Britain,I for one am in favour of that. Then the house of Lords decided that it should be a condition of invoking article 50. I cant see that is a good idea as we have just lost a huge bargaining chip. If [which I dont believe will happen] Spain says al lBritish must leave , we cant retaliate by saying that all Spanish must leave Britain, because the house of Lords have [in their wisdom] decided that we must guarantee their rights by law.
Those who have seen my previous posts will know that I am very pro Brexit, I now hope that once that that is dealt with that we do something about the House of Lords. A second house is a good thing but it MUST be elected otherwise it is not a democracy. Also with over 800 Lords it is costing us over 100 million a year. I think an overhaul is long overdue
