Hi Jan, don't want to be picky but it's actually the Spanish consulate in London that issues the NIE numbers not the embassy.

You cannot book an appointment but you can turn up any weekday between 9am - 2pm and it costs £7.90 at current rates.

You do need to take things with you though such as the completed forms and photocopies of your passports. You need to take 2 of each I think from memory and make sure they are photocopies not just photos as they were turning people away who had just printed photos from their phones.

There is, of course, a massive difference between Embassy and Consulate.

Consulate are Menthol!

Reference the minimum income. This is based on the basic, non contributory state pension payable in Spain and changes every year under the Ley de Presupuestos Generales de Estado.
This requirement was first introduced in 2012 and the sum required was €432 per month.
Abaco advisers on their applying for residency page now says you require "in excess of" €800 per month per person.
Under the Ley above, the 2017 basic pension is €8973.15 or €747 per month per person at the terrible exchange reat we currently have.
If the exchange rate had stayed the same (which it hasn't) then that sum last year would have worked out at about £600 per person per month which is where I reckon the 600 a month comes from, pounds not euros.
Still, pretty sure the way the work at the National Police stations is that someone comes up with a figure, doubles it, takes off an amount decided by their boss and then wets their finger, sticks it in the air and says "Pues, pensamos en 600 euro por mes. Eso servira".
In other words, well, we think about 600 euro a month. That'll do.
