Dignitas

Just looking at another post and it mentioned humans being put to sleep when they are very ill and how it's not really allowed but for animals it is. What's your opinion? Mine is it should be allowed. When my mother in law was on her death bed we begged the doctor to hurry her along, she only had maybe a day or two if that, he said we can't do that it may be for all the wrong reasons. There we are sitting around watching her dying, it's awful for the family, probably not for her at that time as she was out of it, but it's horrendous, we had to watch her deteriorate with dementia/Alzheimers getting anxious and stressed in the care home gradually getting worse day by day, having to wear nappies, she would have hated it and would have loved to have been put to sleep but it's not allowed. Thoughts?

Your post hit a raw nerve. My mother died a year ago aged 92. She had Alzheimer’s and it was so bad we couldnt cope so she lived in a nursing home, at great expense. She fell twice and broke her hip, couldn’t walk and had to be in a wheelchair. She decided that she wanted to die and refused to eat or drink. We had to watch her deteriorate to a skeleton and finally pass away. If she had had a choice she would have ended her life sooner, so I totally agree that in some circumstances a lethal injection would be kinder.

From August to December last year I spent many an hour next to my father watching him die a long slow painful death (cancer due to asbestos).

Like above, he also begged everyone to help him die, he was in such agony. He went from a big strong man down to a weak 7 stone man.

Do I agree with Euthanasia, yes definately.

I realise it’s very simplistic, but what if we all carried an official euthanasia card. (Like a donors card) It would at least make people’s wishes clear and may help with decisions by relatives and Doctors.

Euthanasia is putting someone else to sleep. Dignity in Dying is taking control over your own passing away.

I too watched my father die a slow and painful death from lung cancer.

So much better if he could have said goodbye surrounded by his loved ones instead of being found dead, alone on the settee.

So many people would agree with the above posts, how come that the minority, politicians/lawyers hold sway ?

You wont be short of folllowers for this sensitive topic, I agree too, no one likes to watch suffering. But they say it’s illegal because the person is seen to be at their weakest, most vulnerable. ‘some’ families / significant others, crooked people, might take advantage and coerce them into it, in order to get to money faster. Although I’m sure health professionals could develop an in-depth assessment tool to empower a person make the right decision, to help ereadicate that evil side, it’s not happened yet. Until then, perhaps the only effective choice is to write a living will, years in advance, while we are fit and well. Until then the suffering continues.

.. and I disagree...

the state should not kill people. We should be better than that. If we started doing that there would be no incentive to look for better cures, palliative care etc..

And some children may want to end their parents life just to get the money..

A slippery slope---

Just curious Mondo, would you let a dog suffer?
