Like many people I am dismayed at the recent increase in electricity charges by Iberdrola. I switched back to them in April and my first bill, although high, was about as expected. My next two bills were approximately 30% more than the first one. However, these included the gas charge which amounts to, guess what, 30% of the bill. Example August bill €270 gas charge €90. There was no gas charge on the first bill. How are they allowed to add this gas charge AFTER I signed up to a new contract which never mentioned it. Is there anything I can do as a 30% increase is crippling. TIA

In the present climate, 30% increase is reasonable, in the UK bills are doubling and then doubling again (subsidised by taxpayers)

I appreciate things are even worse in the UK but that doesn't soften the blow. We don't live in the UK and we don't have gas either. I expected this gas supplement but not as much as 30%. It does seem like the unlucky ones who signed up after 26 April are bearing the brunt.

Electricity prices in Spain rose 290% since October last year. The government restrictions on profits and cutting VAT has eased that rise. The gas price is to compensate the gas companies (who provide the fuel to produce electricity) as they are now supplying it at a lower price than they pay for it due to the gas cap.

The gas prices have been charged since July on all those who took out contracts after April 26th or those on the free rate. The EU has just met to try and decrease the energy costs but places like Germany (and UK) are showing much higher rises than Spain. France has capped the price rises but this will have to be paid back later in higher taxes. Belgium and the Netherlands have more than doubled their prices.

Not a lot Iberdrola (or any other company) can do about it as it is beyond their control.
Forecast is that prices will lower over the next few months so that's some consolation.

If there were no gas charges, the companies would go out of business (they aren't charities) and would be unable to provide the electricity causing outages.

Petrol prices are lower because the government is returning some of the extra VAT back to the consumer. They've already cut VAT on domestic fuel twice but all this will have to be paid for sometime in the future.

Not much in the way of good news all round, I'm afraid. Hopefully the windfall tax on energy company profits will alleviate some of this but although 120 billion euro sounds a lot, it isn't when divided between 27 countries with some 450 million people. Spain wanted the windfall tax to be on income but the EU has decided it will only be on profits.

I sympathise as I to changed back to Iberdrola in June, no mention of the gas tax. Nearly half my electric bills are now gas tax!

The electric companies are under no obligation to list the gas bit on the bill. Indeed, many don't but Iberdrola are, at least, being open about it.
One of my neighbours is with one of the other companies and his bill simply states "miscellaneous charges" which has doubled his bill. Electric €120, Misc charges €115 and taxes and services at under €10. Total €239.75 for the month which is, as pointed out, rather outrageous.

My usage was €113 and the regulatory charge was €119 total bill €205.11 utterly ridiculous.

Surely this is miss selling if they don’t tell you about it when you changed your contract ?
Is there no ombudsman type organisation who we could approach ?

Just seen in the Euro Weekly as from today another 9.68% increase
