Hi everyone I hope you are all well,

Would any of you Knowledgeable people be able to advise me about Spanish car insurance, please?
I've recently sold my car after only just paying a year's premium, I cancelled the policy and asked for a pro-rata reimbursement as I have no intention of buying another Spanish car. Mapfre Insurance refused saying the law has changed in Spain and that they were entitled to keep the premium although it could be used for any future Spanish car insurance, completely ignoring my insistence that I have no intention of buying another Spanish car. Do I have any possible course of action or are they entitled to legally steal my money?
Thanks for any information.

Can't say about the change in Spanish law but i know a lot of insurance companies here don't give refunds if you cancel. Right Move Insurance told me that a couple of years ago when i was selling a motorcycle, thankfully the company i was with, Liberty Seguros, were one of those that did.
Regards,
Dave.

You could have transferred the insurance with the car for a small donation from the buyer

When we sold our apartment we had just paid our house insurance and couldn’t get a refund or transfer it to our new property. Ended up just letting it run and made sure we cancelled the renewal so we thought. Closed the bank account with Sabadell and had opened another separate account at a different branch with us and our son on it. The following year it was renewed out of our new account. Our solicitor took it up with them and eventually got a refund after sending them several letters.

Hi Teeaff ive also suffered by this scenario as i was Stupid enough to insure my car with Linea Directa then when we bought a house we got a free car with it so insured that as well but soon realised it was not needed as we were out together 99% of the time, So i contacted my broker who informed me that Linea Directa said the policy would have to run its term before we got a refund & in fact we ended up getting it 18 months later as someone at Linea Directa Screwed things up at there end, But i did get my refund then cancelled all my policies with them as they ran out by cancelling all direct debits with our bank? Cheers Doug.

Thanks everyone for replying.

It looks as though they've got the whip hand and I've got thrashed. Ouch!
