Watch out for brown Renault - with would be robbers!

My husband was out with the dog on Sierra de Gredos along the golf course this morning, when a brown Renault stopped and the owners engaged him in conversation and admired the dog. A few minutes later, when he was dropping off the rubbish, having taken the dog home, they pulled up beside him again and the woman got out and tried to hug him, and push cards for a cleaning company at him. He had to be very brusque to get rid of them and wouldn't let them near him. So keep an eye out and get the number if you see anything like this.

Possibly - but he didn't wear any jewellery - but had a phone in his pocket. They didn't get anything, but he did feel quite intimidated.

It's terrible now having to beware of everybody. The thing is at one time the robbers were scruffy sods so you would be a bit dubious but now a lot look quite respectable and if somebody asks for directions you'd feel inclined to help it's more or less our nature to be kind and helpful but not so much now

The good thing for us 'foreigners' with this scam is if they do appear to ask for directions or have a map in hand while driving alongside us, we can ignore them as if we do not uderstand. It happened to us and we just carried on walking and ignored them. They may have been genuine but us Brits have got to stop worrying about appearing polite! Some other nationalities don't even say thank you in shops ....it's not in their culture and therefore we have to stop being so polite in certain situations (which is in our nature/culture ) but gets us seen as an easy touch sometimes.
BTW they shouted to us in a Spanish accent "are you English" and after saying to my husband quietly "just ignore", we walked on quickly.

I was brought up to be polite in the correct circumstances and will be damed if I am going to stop because of low-lifes.
However, I worked out years ago that if you don’t speak then they cannot be sure they are speaking in the right language. Fortunately I can pass for English, German or Dutch. It almays amuses me seeing these annoying people cycle through their languages trying to find the right one.
