Flat bread roll sliced in half and stuffed with bacon and brown sauce. (Red if your from the south)

Oven bottoms as in the pic above are not quite the same as a balm cake. They dont rise the same and have a slight indentation in the centre. Balm cakes are much softer.

I remember having this conversation nearly forty years ago. I went on a course in Nottingham and was speaking to a girl from Brighton and used the word "Barmcake", which she had never heard before. I'm from Manchester/Salford and that's what everyone called them.
I sent her one, in the post, with a sticker on that said "this is a barmcake". It was a bread roll or something in Brighton :)

Just found some fresh ones in the bakery section of Lidls. Large flat bottom rolls very much like Barm cakes if not the same - Quite soft and 29c each and they call them Mollete. Definitely nicer than what we southerners call baps.

Be interested to know if the experts on Balm cakes agree if they are the same or similar.
