Can anybody please tell me if it is a requirement by law to place at least one smoke alarm in a rented property? Particularly where the property has only one main exit and fixed grilles at the windows.

Is this a short (holiday) or long term rental?

Pete.

The short answer is that I don’t know.
However, given the low price of smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors, and the personal benefits of having these alarms installed, I’d just go out and buy them and take them with me when I leave.

Pete.

Hi Lizzy, my understanding is that it's not a requirement in Spain but we have them in all our rentals as I couldn't live with myself if anyone died in a fire and there were no detectors.

Fair comment Joe! Not all landlords are so caring as you! However, they are cheap enough to buy and we will install our own!

Thank you for that.
