Best of both worlds is about right.
It can get very cold a night in the winter months and as you have already seen, very windy.
There are some super designs out there, very non intrusive and some with solar and temperature controlled opening.
If you want to go the whole hog, you can get polarized 'electric' glass, bloody expensive, but bloody amazing too.
