Thanks for all your suggestions but in the end I contacted Humax customer services who were very helpful and e mailed
me info on how to reset and reformat it. Unfortunately it did not work. They do not offer a service for this model and suggest a refurbished exchange or a new box (£200:00). Is there any one out there who could take a look and see if can be repaired poss new hard drive ?

A new hard drive could cost up to 100 euros depending on size so worth considering a refurbished one .
