I have flights booked out and back from uk every 2 months. I'm just changing them each time and seeing how it plays out. My thinking is that if 2020 is ''cancelled' tourist wise, demand for flights in 2021 will sky rocket.

Also ,all new bookings made after March 18th 2020 are not being covered by insurers , however amended booking made prior to this date are. There' also the reality that if everyone goes for refunds then the airline sector will collapse and in that case prices will again be of a premium and include stop overs in various hubs if the low cost go out of business.

These are all valid points. However if you already have 5 flights in the pipeline and can only book until February as was the case, this is not always practical. Also if you have paid a lot of money for your original flight because it was in the summer, to swap it for a flight that is much cheaper In the winter months and you don’t get credit, than I would rather have my money back thank you. I would have more sympathy with the airlines if they waived any difference in fare and hadn’t just paid themselves a big dividend! Also some people book for a one of occasion and the moment has passed. Also the airlines could go bust regardless and all your money is lost. The Airlines are not worried about you, they will do what is best for them and expect the taxpayer to bail them out too. Easyjet was devious and tried to trick people out of refunds by offering vouchers only, and some people did not realise they were entitled to a refund. They made it almost impossible to get a refund. I only got mine after I rang the international number and was on hold for 3 hours having no success on the U.K. number as they didn’t even allow you to hold. When Easyjet cancelled my May flight to Kraków there was a refund button and I was able to get a refund online without any hassle but they cynically withdrew that by the time the Easter flights were cancelled so they deliberately made it difficult to get refunds. So you can tell my sympathies are with the flying public not the Airlines.

Go the bank chargeback route. I got my money refunded by the bank straight away for a Ryanair flight on May.
