Electricity Supply for New Property

Started a new topic as there was no response when added to existing thread on utilities. Hoping somene has experience or can advice.

We will be taking posession of our new build in September and need to sort out utilities (water and electricity). We have read about the possible advantage of signing up for the "PVPC" rate direct with Iberdrola.

Has anyone done this and what has been their experience - have they seen a change in their bills (higher or lower!). Is it worth changing to PVPC or signup for contract with banding.

Also if taking out a regular contract (not PVPC) any suggestions on what we should watch out for would be appreciated?

Many thanks

We bought a new build villa and the builder / developer, already had the water and electricity supplies connected during the build. The utility contracts were then switched to our names when we completed and signed at the notary, Your lawyer should be able to help with advice on this too.

We are on a standard Iberdrola contract, I’ve no idea what the PVP option is so unfortunately can’t help with that. Good luck with your new house!

Many thanks Paul. Our builder wants to do the same but we have told him we will select the enery supplier and the contract as we don't want to be tied to anything they do! We read on another post that PVCP (Variable Price for the Small Consumer) worked out cheaper than a contract - my understanding is that the rate for PVCP is no a frills regulated rate based on daily actual energy supply cost so a bit like the exchange rate or oil market where the rate changes daily and the rate you pay would be the rate on a particular day so like exchange rates/oil prices it will go up and down depending on the energy market - this is supposed to be cheaper in the long run and I don't think you have to worry about doing everthing after midnight to save money as the rate is set for the day - the idea being when you average it out over the year it is a lot cgeaper than a set monthly contract rate .....I could be completely wrong and stand ready to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable!

Thanks again

Don´t know if this will interest you or not.
I have a " white meter " with Iberdrola and have an 8 hour plan. I choose the 8 hours I want as the cheap rate, outside of those hours is a more expensive rate. You can split the hours to suit your lifestyle. Works for me.
Take a peek at the Iberdrola.es website

Many thanks much appreciated and we will look into it. This is our first new build with a/c and large swimming pool in a country with little experieince of living long term. Until we get into a routine of living out here it might be a little challenging to work out how we would split the cheap rate to maximise our electricity usage. Both I and my wife have completely different interests and will most likey make different demads on how we use the electricity!

We are not discounting a contract but would like to hear from anyone who has experience of going down the PVPC route. There are obvious attractions to a monthly contract and knowing monthly outgoings on utilities. In the UK we find we normally overpay significantly each year and get a large refund because the utility companies overestimate monthly DD's. It may be PAYG is a better option and just pay for what you use but we don't know and that is why it would be useful to hear from anyone who has a PVCP contract.

We do appreciate your recommendatin and will look at it. Thanks again

Sorry to tell you, but expect a nasty surprise. Electricity prices in Spain have recently gone through the roof.
I would strongly advise you to get a plan, for example the 8 hour plan from Iberdrola, then evaluate your usage afterwards.
Ensure your pool pump only runs in your cheap periods, otherwise could cost a fortune.
With the Iberdrola 8 hour plan I can check check my daily usage and adjust the hours via the internet or the app on the phone.

Many thanks - that would certainly be useful if you can adjust the hours on the fly. Will check it out. .

Do people not have PVCP as it is more expensive than other types of contract or is it that it is not widely avaialble or known about?

Thanks again

First heard about it in another TQ post which highlighted this link: http://www.sparksinspain.es/problems/th ... ola-point/

That is why if anyone has gone down this route it would be interesting to hear from them and their experience.
