Thank you all. Have now successfully opened an account, and definitely not with Santander.

hi Angela, which bank did you decide open an account with? I'm currently sanatander, registered with a branch in torrevieja, no major problems so far, they answer my queries on the account by email which is good.
Santander don't charge any fees ''IF'' there are 3 DD's a month, pay in 600 euro a month (and you can transfer it out again), and have over 3000 in to get 3% interest. so not to bad,...... except I don't meet the above requirements, meaning I get charged around 8 euros a month for the account.

I also know Sabadell charges at least 10 euros a month too.

have you found one that has lower charges, better still no charges at all?

Yes we opened an account with sabodell Cabo Roig, even though we live in Quesada but the after sales team of the estate agent are based there and they helped us. We dealt with a lovely Scottish man at the bank, Paul Lister, who made everything so easy for us.
At the moment we have a non residents account (called key account I beleive) and there are no charges.
We intend to apply for residency in the new year so I know we will have to change bank accounts then.
Can not recommend Paul Lister at the branch enough, such a helpful guy.
