Do you already have an NIE number? If so, you can walk into any bank and open an account with your passport and NIE certificate. Your hardest decision will be which bank - they all have pretty average customer service and charge fees for non-resident banking. The only differentiator for me was Sabadell's large network of branches, meaning you're never far from one of their cashpoints, and their online banking facility.

Opened mine without a NIE.

Could not believe how easy it was in comparison to the U.K.

Confirm no NIE required to open a spainish bank account , my partner done it a couple of weeks ago at caxia bank in quesada ....just walked in all sorted within 30 minutes and a temporary cash card issued ...just uk passport required as ID ....staff all speak English and also set up on line banking for her while she was there ...didn't even have to make an initial deposit

Sabadell wanted NIE when we opened our account. You'll need an NIE to buy your property in January - you can't buy without one.

Our solicitor opened our account with Sabadell when we bought our apartment last December while we were in the UK. All she needed was copies of our passports. Sabadell emailed the documents to open the account to us which we had to sign and return by post.

We then transferred all the money needed over to Sabadell before coming back to Spain to complete the purchase. Our solicitor took us to Orihuela Police Station the day before we signed the sale contract to get our NIE's. They definitely werent needed to open a bank account but were needed to complete the purchase.

that's strange they are now asking for your uk N.i. number as well now its a legal requirement to deposit money in a spanish bank account I was told by Sabadell branch Rojales ,to prevent money laundering, so HMRC can exchange info with the Spanish tax authorities if suspected.
