New bank details for Non Resident

Just wondering if anyone else knows about a 'new' requirement.

Have just visited Sabadell Bank in Quesada to update our contact details.

We were informed that it now a requirement to register our UK National Insurance numbers with the Bank.

Not having the NI details with us, we will have to go back with them.

Anyone heard of this and why it is necessary?

Note we are Non Residents with a property out here.

New EU ruling I believe. And it works the other way. I have a UK bank account and am a permanent resident in Spain and we have had to register our Spanish fiscal number (NIE) with our UK bank.

They also required a copy of our passports and proof of fiscal residency countersigned by our Spanish bank.

Thanks for your reply.
Presumably if we we hadn't wanted our contact info changed we would be blissfully unaware of this new rule!

All the Spanish Banks require it now, some have blocked paying DD's etc. until the information has been provided.
We bank with Sabadell and they emailed the requirements to us July last year. They also provided an email address to send our NI numbers to as were were non-resident and they replied saying all was updated.
From our email . . .

You can inform us of your TIN:
 • By BS Online, through the route: Personal information > Update data > Tax Details.
 • Calling us on our freephone number 900 120 126.
 • By sending us an email to [email protected].

If you choose to contact us by email, please include “CRS” in the subject line, and in the body of the email please include your name and surname(s) , your country of tax residence, and your tax identification number in your country of tax residence

Thanks.
I've just looked through past emails - couldn't see anything.
Mind you, that's the reason why we went to the bank today - to update our details and go paperless!

Interesting, never been asked for NI numbers specifically. But have supplied UK tax return and tax coding details which has NI numbers on it so maybe this is essentially the same thing...showing tax reference in UK...

They call it a TIN (Tax Identification Number) which is your NI number in UK and your NIE in Spain.

On the subject of NIE.
I've just been informed by my new solicitor that my original NIE certificate should be updated - it was issued 20 years ago.
Has anyone done this, and how long does it take?
Thanks for any info.

It is all to do with banks by regulations and sharing of information for tax purposes.
One of the actions brought in after the worldwide financial crisis and everything that came out with tax avoidance/evasion.

Hi. Had to update my NIE of 30 years recently. Once at Orihuela police station the process took about 15 mins. The hard bit is getting an appointment, I left that to Sunflower Costa Blanca in Benijofer.
