To Barry Cooper,
Staying more than 6 months will affect your tax status also. The law is that you should pay your taxes to the country in which you live in for more than six months. If you wish to remain tax resident in the UK then your official stay here should be less than 6 months.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my query TonTri,marcliff,JanJan .thanks for the excellent information we didn't realise that that there was a 6 months limit on our stay. I will certainly be phoning Newcastle to set the wheels in motion marcliff. Thanks again for your responses, regards Barry Kathy.

The good thing is, once you have formalised your status and got your SIP cards, the medical facilities here are second to none.
I haven't, personally, had to use them but my wife has used the one in Dona Pepa (excellent) and has been referred to the health centre in Guardamar and to the Torrevieja hospitals for specialists. Both brilliant service and extremely quick (4 days wait for the ENT specialist appointment in Guardamar and just one week for the rheumatologist appointment in Torrevieja.)
