State healthcare in this region is second to none and far superior to the healthcare i was used to in the UK

yes.. the health service here is very like private medicine elsewhere.. fast appointments, knowledgeable doctors and private rooms if admitted with telly, phone, spare bed for family and bathrooms akin to 4 star hotels...

Also remember that those over 65 will find the premiums will be rather high, especially with any pre-existing conditions if cover will even be provided.

Also agree with the Spanish NHS. Excellent GP and excellent service at the hospital from all personnel, medical and ancillaries. They even provide towels in the individual rooms just like a hotel.

We had to go to A&E Saturday, the receptionist was so helpful and I thanked her and said how lovely and helpful she was. Her reply was "Welcome to Hotel Torrevieja"

My wife had to be admitted last month. When the porter wheeled her into the room he said "Welcome to the room with a view". She had a huge picture window overlooking the orange groves and the salt lakes.
She also had an itch on her back she couldn't quite reach (what with 3 tubes sticking out of her arm and all) and used the door frame to try and do it. The cleaner came in saw her and started to scratch her back for her.
The only thing she didn't like was being on a liquid only diet for a week and it was weak tea with no milk for breakfast and apple juice and some horrible and tasteless consomme for the other meals. I took her in a flask of oxo and a flask of thin tomato soup to give her something with taste. The lady providing the meals noticed she hadn't eaten the consomme (which the doctor referred to as rubbish but necessary) and the catering lady brought in a bowl of home made chicken broth one evening.
Couldn't fault the care from any of the staff.
