Currently in Spain having just drove down for the first time. Although more expensive than flying, driving does have advantages. We sailed from Portsmouth to Santander & found the drive down a pleasurable experience. Only Toll paid was €2.60 & the toll free roads a doddle (with a good sat-nav).

My advice is to go for it and enjoy the ride. Don't forget to take out additional European breakdown cover & check what you need to bring with you for your proof of ownership for the vehicle you are using.

Try Portsmouth to Caen overnight ferry, then head for Rennes, Nantes, Bordeaux, Pau, Jaca, Zaragoza, Valencia, Alicante, Quesada.
One overnight stay either side of the border up in the Pyrenees is delightful. Tolls about €45.00, drive time about 17 hours.

1. is the ferry crossing only with Brittany ferries?
2. What is best to go into Santander or Bilbao ?
3. Also is September known as winter for crossing and does someone advise day or night crossing ?

Brittany ferries are the only one doing the UK/Spain route.
Either although the road from Bilboa is more direct but has a toll of about €28 to start with.
No, September is not a winter crossing. Would preferably have a night crossing as you can then drive down in daylight. Some of the roads, even motorways, don't have cats-eyes and it can be a bit difficult to see the sides of the road with dipped headlights, especially as you will need headlight deflectors.
About 8 and half hours drive with a couple of comfort and coffee stops. Virtually motorway all the way and, except around major towns like Burgos, Madrid, Albacete and Elche, mainly empty.
Documents are your normal road fund licence, MOT (in date) insurance and bring your car reg document just in case.
Make sure your insurance covers you and check on the cover as most insurance companies reduce it to the minimum level (3rd party only) when you leave UK. Also take out continental breakdown cover for your stay. Green Flag is one of the cheapest and gives good cover.
