Smart meter bills

Just as a heads up to everyone who has received a new monthly electric bill from Iberdrola from their new smart meter, we went into Iberdrola last week as our last 2 bills had no reading on them and consequently we were only paying the charges and tax. They informed us that our new smart meter had not been activated yet and wouldn't be until they eventually got around to it ! Therefore all bills wouldn't be recording a reading, so we gave them our current reading and paid 156 euros. So if this is you I advise doing your own reading and giving it to them or you might end up with a big bill later in the year !

Cheers Lynnjon, I'll keep that in mind. We've been told we have already had a smart meter fitted but they havent yet deployed it as they are waiting for the infrastructure to be put in place in our area.

We are still on 2-monthly billing and are due the next one in Feb, but at least I know what to look out for if we suddenly go to monthly billing.

A couple of other things to watch out for. We received our monthly bill having left the property with the mains power switched off. The total to pay was 23 euros, we contacted Iberdrola:

Potencia facturada (power charges) 9.95 euro. Regarding your query, power charges are standing charges billed on every invoice for having an active supply with a certain power capacity ( 3.45 kW) subscribed. They are calculated by multiplying the power capacity subscribed by the days of the billing period, and this by the price. So that's a standing charge no matter how much electricity you use.
Energia facturada ( actual energy used ) 0.52 euro
Alquiler equipos medida ( equipment hire) 0.56 euro another standing charge.
Proteccion Electrica Hogar ( Appliance insurance) 5.95 euro. We didn't sign up to it, but it seems to be a good deal, so we will keep that on.
Seguro Proteccion de Pagos Plus ( PPI ) 2 euros. We never signed up for this. I have lodged a formal complaint, number 879073300, requesting the cancellation of the Payment Protection Insurance, and the amounts paid to be refunded. The legal time frame for complaints to be answered is 30 business days, but they are usually sorted much sooner.
IVA at 3.61 euros
So with this in mind a completely empty apartment on a 3.45kW tarrif, with the power switched off at mains should cost you around 23 euros for the month . Minus the insurance on appliances and PPI, will bring it down to around 13 euros, but I think the appliance insurance is a good deal.
If you do have any issues or queries just email iberdrola, they contacted me within a few hours.
