We are currently with Iberdrola for our electricity and am finding the bills extortionate for the amount of electricity we actually use, I've tried looking online at other companies but there's that many, any recommendtions ?TIA

It doesn't matter which company you go with. The only suppliers of the power are Iberdrola and Endesa in this area.
That means the amount of standing charges (the cost of providing the power, the VAT, rental of meter and so on) makes up most of the bill and you will still pay those regardless of which company you go with to pay for the electricity you use.

Some companies will offer a reduced rate on the cost of electricity but then change it a bit later on. Most who have changed say they get a reduced rate, but not on the standing charges, which increases over time. Others have said they have had two lots of charges and so on.

The standard charges for the power supply and so on are made every month whether you use electricity or not.
As an example, my last bill came to €61.12 for the month. Of that, only €22.64 was for the actual cost of the electricity used and the rest was for the provision of the power, taxes (both IVA and electric taxes), meter rental etc. My bill states that, of the total, 32% was for the actual amount of electricity used.

Another company may offer a 10% discount but that would only be on the cost of the electricity used so, in my case, I would save about €2 a month.

Judging by the hassle other people say they have had then it would hardly be worth it.

The only way to save is to reduce the amount of power you are contracted for but then you have the problems of modern equipment going over that limit and items tripping out all the time.

These electrickery companies have it all worked out.

Our biggest saving with Iberdrola, which has reduced our bills by some €20 a month, was by changing tariff to the day/night one and using things like washing machines/dishwashers etc during the cheap times plus the overnight heating in the Winter and aircon in the Summer.

Our last bill was €119 and before that it was €149, we are quite a green family so never fill the kettle full, lights switched off etc, our pool is on for 2 hours a day and washing machine maybe 5 times during the week, heating is by wood burner.... I’m just going by our neighbours and friends bills. I’m thinking it could be that some of the appliances like oven, hob, boiler etc are old and not as efficient Thank you for the response I’m going to change our tariff and see what happens.

They do a range of tariffs. I use the 8 hour one because it suits my lifestyle. I have cheap rate from 8am to 11am and then again from 5pm to 10pm. I find those are the hours where I do my washing, showering, cooking etc. all the things that use the most electricity. If you put the water heater to come on only in those hours as well you can save even more. Check out which tariff suits you best.

that's expensive considering no heating, then you got your wood bill on top,buy some thermal underwear n save on heating, I,m on night n day tariff,my last bill for December was €50, I have my hot water boiler on a timer 6am till 10am stops hot all day,use washer once or twice a week ,dry washing outside on the line, and I,m very power/water conscious and think I could do better by about €10,which I,m trying to in future.
